The creation of a relational database and web-based platform for alien plant species of Greece was the subject of a project assigned to the University of Patras, Department of Biology, by the National Center for Environment and Sustainable Development (NCESD) and subsequently N.E.C.C.A.

Currently, the Alien plants database of Greece and the web-based platform consist of 457 taxa, of which 282 are established aliens, 167 are non-established aliens and 8 are aliens of unknown establishment status. The non-established aliens (casual, ephemeral introductions, or occasional escapees from cultivation) are included in the database, in order to apply a monitoring mechanism for detecting the spread and the establishment rate of these non-established alien in the mid- and the long term.

Modern tools to visualize the information for the alien plants of Greece are used; reports can be exported at different spatial scales (national, regional at the level of floristic regions, local); reports and analyses can be produced by searching any of the above fields that could be of interest either for research purposes or for policy planning on Greek alien species.

The project on the Alien flora of Greece was initially funded by the National Center for Environment and Sustainable Development and then by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A).
